Where the Vision Began
Every build starts differently — sometimes with a full set of drawings, sometimes with a sketch on the back of a receipt. This one started with a strong sense of lifestyle.
When our clients came to us, they already had a concept in mind: something personal, something connected to the land, and definitely not a catalogue home. Working with the designer Andrew Orchard , we helped turn that early vision into a buildable plan that stayed true to what mattered most to them.
Before the land was even purchased, the full concept went to the Riverside Estate developer for approval to ensure it met the architectural requirements. Getting the concept approved early meant the whole project could move forward smoothly.
Working With the Land, Not Against It
Riverside Estate has a pretty unique setup: no boundary fences, flowing green spaces, and vineyard rows that shape where homes sit. The design needed to sit naturally within the environment rather than competing with it.
From day one, our clients had a “less is more” mindset, which fits the area perfectly.
Being right on the river was a big drawcard (future whitebaiting missions were mentioned more than once). Naturally, the vision soon included a boat… and a shed for the boat… and eventually a home that tied it all together. Classic Marlborough logic — we loved it.
Louise from Noble Fox created a landscape plan that made the home feel like it belonged there from the start by keeping things simple, natural and low-impact.
Designing Spaces That Truly Work
A big early decision was choosing between three or four bedrooms. In the end, a three-bedroom plus office layout and a separate sleepout attached to the shed gave the family the privacy and flexibility they wanted without unnecessary extra floor area.
As the owners said, “fish, family and friends go off in three days,” which gave us all a laugh (and also made complete sense).
Thoughtful features were added throughout — like glass-panelled lounge doors for noise control without feeling closed off.
The Kitchen: The Heart of the Home
The kitchen was a big focus for this family — they love to cook, host and connect over food. So the kitchen was one of the most important parts of the build.
We worked with Aimee Materoa with Materoa Design to refine the design and make sure every choice balanced function, aesthetics and budget. Deep drawers, smart layout decisions and a hard-working scullery all came out of that process.
Amie was also the hero responsible for narrowing down more than 200 paint colours to a shortlist of five. She guided the tile selection process too, helping land on timeless options that can evolve with décor over time.
Craftsmanship You Can Feel
A big part of what makes this home work is the attention to detail from the team involved:
-
- Nazareth Joinery – custom kitchen & cabinetry
-
- Jason Wills, Willie & Tom – tiling & brickwork
-
- Aotea Electrical – electrical work
-
- GPS Plumbing – plumbing work
- Heating Marlborough – fireplace supply & guidance
The fireplace became a standout feature. Inspired by one the owners had seen on a family trip, it uses the same exterior block inside, creating a clean indoor–outdoor connection. In winter, they often choose fire-watching over TV.
Built for Comfort, Efficiency & Longevity
From insulation to glazing to sun protection, the home was designed with long-term comfort in mind. Wider soffits, smart window choices and high-performance materials help keep the home warm in winter, cool in summer and efficient year-round.
Low-maintenance cladding was a must — beautiful stack bonded brick and the final choice of Siberian Larch feature cladding gives the home a warm, natural look that will last. Small details like quality door hardware, mirrored windows for privacy and tinted glazing for Marlborough sun make everyday living easier.
Landscaping That Brings It All Together
Because this home uses a rural septic system, the wastewater bed planting started early, giving the garden a head start.
Most of the planting is native, and it’s already attracting tui, kingfishers, white herons and even the odd pukeko.
The edible garden came together quickly too — citrus, fruit trees, and raised vege beds.
The harder landscaping is still evolving, and plans for a swimming pool and upgraded outdoor entertaining area (with pizza oven) are already on the wish list.
A Home That Feels Like Home
For us, the best part of revisiting a completed project is seeing how it’s settled into daily life. This home now feels exactly as it was intended — relaxed, warm, simple and genuinely suited to the family who dreamed it up. Head on over to the Project Page to be inspired and see what is possible.
